As the sun set over the west coast of the island this past Saturday March 18th, the first major tree-planting event organized by the non-profit GreenCyprusCom organisation was completed with outstanding success, with over 1000 trees planted along the scenic coastline of ‘Petra tou Romiou’ (Aphrodite’s Rock).
 
Hundreds of volunteers concerned with the environmental wellbeing of the island participated in the tree-planting activities, paving the way for the reforestation of Cyprus. Despite last weekend’s rainy weather that necessitated a last-minute change of plans – compelling the organisation to re-schedule the event initially planned for the 11th and 12th March –  numerous volunteers rose to the occasion proving their willingness to actively assist in creating a greener Cyprus.
 
The initiative was backed by various benefactors, supported by a number of officials, including members of the Cyprus Parliament, the Green Party, and the local municipal council.
 
Member of Pafos Municipal Council, Andreas Chrysanthou, confirmed his commitment to supporting all of the organization’s future re-forestation activities in the area, while entrepreneur and philanthropist German Lillevyali, one of the benefactors of the initiative, enthused: “This is an initiative aiming to restore and preserve the natural beauty of Cyprus for future generations.” He then congratulated the volunteers who joined the effort, many bringing their children along with them.
 
Tree-planting is a fun and educational activity for all ages, especially for the many young environmentalists who enjoyed the opportunity to connect with nature, planting trees side-by-side their families, supervised and assisted by experts from the Department of Forests. Aside from all necessary equipment, free snacks and soft drinks - courtesy of KEAN and LAY’S - were provided for all attendees during the day.
 
GreenCyprusCom is a non-profit organization bringing together people who care about nature and are committed to reviving the island’s greenery. By organizing regular reforestation events with the support of the Department of Forests, the organization is committed to actively assisting in the restoration and preservation of Cyprus’ ecosystem.
 
Amongst other expenses, the organization is also handling the initial cost of planting and providing care for the young trees during their first three years of life.
