On 24^th February, more than 38 activists gathered again to plant 200 new trees at the second GreenCyprusCom event in the Petra Tou Romiou area.

The popularity of the GreenCyprusCom movement is steadily gaining momentum, which means we are now closer to reaching our goal of restoring forest diversity in Cyprus and providing new habitat for the birds and animals of the island. Thanks to the untiring help and support of both students and volunteers attending second GreenCyprusCom event, we have been able to plant 200 new trees on the Paphos coastline.

"It is our shared task; only together can we restore the flora of Cyprus, devastated in the past by fires," said the representative of the GreenCyprusCom movement, Lina Themistokleous, who also thanked the participants for their responsiveness and initiative.

The tree planting event was attended by volunteers who found out about GreenCyprusCom event through social networks. Andrew and Mary, alongside their friends, were some of the first volunteers to respond in aiding the reforestation of Cyprus—and we hope many others will follow their example! Educational institutions also took interest in the event, including a geography teacher and 11 students from the Heritage School Limassol, who assisted in the tree planting.

Representatives of the Department of Forests also attended the event and instructed the participants on tree planting process, sharing useful tips and recommendations. Andreas Mavroyiakoumos, the Senior Conservator of Forests, emphasised that "proper planting contributes 50% towards the successful growth of a tree”.

At the end of the event the staff of the Department of Forests arranged for the irrigation of all the trees planted by the volunteers. In a few years’ time, these small saplings will cover the island with a layer of healthy green foliage.
